Inventory and Collection Control

This involves systematic activities to ensure that all library materials are accounted for, properly shelved, and in good condition.

  • Shelf Reading: Staff regularly check shelves to ensure that books and other materials are in correct order (e.g., by call number), and re-shelve any misplaced items.
  • Inventory Checks: Periodic audits are conducted to verify the physical presence of items listed in the catalog. Missing or unaccounted-for items are flagged for follow-up.
  • Damage and Wear Monitoring: Worn or damaged items are identified and either repaired, replaced, or withdrawn from circulation.
  • Barcode/RFID Scanning: Barcode & RFID scanning tools/apps are used during inventory for faster and more accurate tracking.
  • Reporting: Inventory reports help in identifying lost, overdue, or non-circulating items and inform collection development or weeding decisions.
  • Security Control: Monitoring of anti-theft systems and ensuring that materials are not removed without proper check-out.
